If the good Lord lets me live that long, or I don't otherwise have a stroke first, I will be in the minority not just sexual orientation wise, but also racially, according to the U.S. Census' latest figures (AP, via AJC) -- which is sure to freak many peckerwoods out today, who will inevitably make calls for racial purity that are so disgusting that even Goebbels would blush. America will be 439 million people strong by the 2050s.
Gwinnett County has already headed that way here in Georgia, and the country will be that way in 2042.
Diversity is great. It makes America interesting, and I think, stronger. Taste the rainbow, baby.
And yes, English will still exist. It's too powerful a business force for it to not be a dominant language -- even if we're kissing up to our Chinese overlords by then down here in the soon-to-be Far Western Autonomous Province of Georgia.
Much of these demographic shiftings are due to the fact that there are a high number of immigrants (legal and illegal) coming into the country, often with high birth rates.
The Census Bureau warned, however, that there could be big revisions over the years, depending on immigration policy changes, plagues, pestilence, if W/al-Qaida blow us all to kingdom come in the next few months, we all become infertile a la Children of Men, etc.
If the Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE, formerly the INS) has its way, some people might self-deport. They're inviting undocumented persons with otherwise clean criminal records to seek ICE's help in leaving the country, called the "Scheduled Departure Program." It gives people three months to get their stuff in order to avoid a raid and getting thrown in detention. If you're not from Mexico, you'll get a one-way airplane ride home. If you are from Mexico, you just get a bus ticket to Laredo or Tijuana or Nogales or Yuma or etc.
Few people are taking the bait, but ad campaigns targeting ethnic media are being started with Spanish-language outlets, as well as Polish-language radio in Chicago.
(Yes, I know there are problems with illegal immigration, and yes, there needs to be reform. But you cannot deport 12-14 million people all at once.)
